The
Old Bridge
In early times, the River Tweed was crossed at Berwick by a low tide ford
or ferry boat, then a succession of wooden or stone bridges. What is now called the Old Bridge was completed in 1634, and carried the Great North Road from London to Edinburgh until the opening of the nearby Royal Tweed Bridge in 1928. Built of local red sandstone, the Old Bridge still carries traffic today. |
