The War Memorial

Berwick's war memorial caused considerable controversy in the town. Committees bickered, and at one point it was intended that the memorial should take the place of the Scotsgate, right in the centre of the main north road. The war memorial committee resigned en masse over this.

Eventually the vicar of St.Mary's Church broke the deadlock by suggesting a site in front of his church. The memorial was unveiled by Earl Haig in 1923. Spittal and Tweedmouth have their own memorials.
