MacLagen Monument

Hygeia the classical goddess of health appears near Berwick Infirmary on a monument to Dr Philip Whiteside Maclagan.

A native of Edinburgh he married Dr George Johnston's second daughter, Margaret, and inherited the practice on his father-in-law's death in 1855. His kindness towards his patients was legendary, and when he died in 1892, there was an immediate wave of public support for a monument. £758 was raised and a masons yard in Edinburgh had a suitable figure in stock.

For many years the monument acted as a drinking fountain in the High Street.
