Norham Church
|
This effigy of an unknown knight dates to around 1320. His legs are crossed,
indicating that he took part in two crusades, and his feet rest upon a
lion.
Norham is the place whwre St Aidan crossed the Tweed on his way from Iona
to establish his monastery at Lindisfarne in 635. The first stone church
in Norham was founded in 830, and the present building was begun in 1165.
Ancient stones found inside the sanctuary wall bear Celtic decorative
motifs.
