Carving a Landscape

The very earliest art of the region are the hundreds of spirals hewn into the very stones of the high moorlands.

No-one knows their original purpose, but perhaps, like similar spiral carvings of the Australian aborigines they represent 'spirit' maps celebrating the creation of the land by ancestors.
