In 1948 by millionaire ship magnate Sir William Burrell's presented 42
paintings to form the nucleus of the present Art Gallery. Opening long
before the big Burrell Gallery in Glasgow, the paintings, and about 300
items of decorative art, are a microcosm of Sir William's interest.
Sir William lived at Hutton Castle, a few miles from Berwick.
