Lowry in Berwick

L.S.Lowry (1887-1976) was a regular visitor to Berwick after his mother's death in 1939. Two pictures of Berwick were included in his first London exhibition. Indeed such was his interest in the town that he considered buying the prominent 'Lions House' on the ramparts in the late 1940s. But the house was found to be suffering from dry-rot and the recent sale of some pictures made him reconsider a move further north.

Berwick came into the national press in 1998, when the Council decided to demolish a shelter included in one of Lowry's pictures. A campaign by Lowry enthusiasts saved the 'monument' and has been restored to its original appearance.
