Wallace and The Quintet

A remarkable feature of James Wallace's work are the illustrations he provided for newsletters circulated between him and four local friends. Gathered into bound volumes named The Quintet the letters give a relaxed picture of five Edwardian young men at the outset of the careers.

The Quintet only continued for a couple of years after Wallace's death in 1911. Of the contributors to the letters it was probably Travers Hegearty, who achieved the most international recognition. Under the name 'Henry Travers' he became a Hollywood character actor.
