The Arts In Berwick -- Visual Arts -- Painting
James Wallace (1872-1911)

Shortly after he was born in Blyth, James Wallace's family moved to Berwick, where his father, James Wallace, snr took charge of the Berwick Art School.

Young James was educated at the Royal College of Art and travelled around the continent. Returning to Berwick he took up a post at the Art School but died unexpectedly in the same year as his father. The Art School was forced to close.

In his short career Wallace produced a mass of work, especially views of Berwick. His paintings are in the Victorian narrative tradition, with some influence of the conservative and nationalistic Hague school of Dutch artists.
