The Arts In Berwick -- Visual Arts -- Engraving
A Noble Prospect

By the mid 18th century Berwick was beginning to attract the attention of antiquarians.

Every summer from 1728 to 1753 Samuel Buck and his brother Nathaniel travelled throughout England making drawings of the major towns, which they would then engrave and publish. It was a slow process, they visited Berwick in 1728 but the view did not appear until 1745. They got the idea for the series of town views from a highly successful series of views of antiquities produced from 1728.

The Bucks' original drawing of Berwick is now in Yale, USA and the copper printing plate in Newcastle.
