The
Arts In Berwick -- Theatre
Pierrots at Spittal
The love-lorn Pierrot appeared first in Italy in the 1670s. He then turned
up in English panto until ousted by 'clown'.
A troupe of singing Pierrots made their first appearance on the Isle of
White in 1891 and the idea spread rapidly to other seaside resorts, completely
replacing the minstrel acts that had previously dominated. The Pierrots
were themselves eclipsed by more sophisticated revues, but were briefly
revived on stage in '20s.
In 1983 a new troupe, The Pierrotters, was formed in Brighton. They have
performed around British coasts ever since and appeared in Berwick in
1992.
