Corn Exchange and Queen's Rooms

The Corn Exchange was built in 1858 as a market and auction rooms. It was also in demand for public meetings, balls and concerts, having a seating capacity of 2000.

Further up, the Queen's Rooms Theatre, below the King's Arms in Hide Hill, was described in 1895 as:- "one of the most complete and popular halls of the town. It is conveniently and comfortably arranged with side rooms, gallery etc; accommodates 1000 and is much used for all kinds of public meetings and entertainment's".

The D'Oyley Carte Company and many other well known performers appeared in this theatre which continued into the moving picture era.
