The
Arts In Berwick -- Theatre
Shakespeare's Berwickers
The first ever record of a visit by actors to Berwick was in September
1564.
Shakespeare, like Chaucer centuries before, refers to Berwick as a far-away
place, the farthest point from London. There are though, two Berwickers
as characters in Henry VI, Part 2. Saunder Simpcox and his wife are unmasked
as confidence tricksters and ordered to be whipped through every market
town in England until they reach Berwick, "from whence they came".
Apparently this was a true incident which Shakespeare found in Foxe's
'Book of Martyrs'.
