The
Royal Court Theatre at Gefrin
(Yeavering, near Wooler)
|
The earliest publicly funded performing-arts venue in the North-East was
the auditorium at the Royal Saxon Palace at Yeavering near Kirknewton.
Discovered during excavations in the 1950s it had seating for 320. Court
cases, political speeches and the sermons of visiting Saints could have
taken place in the space, but perhaps most intriguing of all, this 'Royal
Court Theatre' might just have been the venue for the world premiere of
the heroic poem Beowulf.
