The Modern Countryside

For centuries mainly known for its agriculture, such as Cheviot sheep, the Borough's countryside is now a major tourist attraction.

The need for countryside to be set aside for recreation was recognised as Victorian cities expanded, the National Trust being founded in 1895 and a Society for Nature Reserves in 1912. An enquiry in 1929 established the need for National Parks but it was not until 1951 that they first came into existence, Northumberland National Park was created in 1956.

Many writers have celebrated the Northumberland countryside, in prose and verse, but the contribution Henry Tegner and Nancy Ridley have been particularly notable.
