Arts In Berwick -- Natural History
Prideaux John Selby
Based at his house at Twizell just south of the Tweed, Prideaux John Selby
(1788-1867) was one of the foremost ornithologists of the 19th.Century.
His Illustrations of British Ornithology (1821-33) set a new standard
of record, and he was fully involved with early developments of the science,
playing host to J.J.Audubon amongst others. Another landmark publication
was his British Forest Trees (1842) based on his planting experiments
on the Twizell estate.
