The
Arts In Berwick -- Natural History
The Berwickshire Naturalists Club
Founded by Dr.George Johnston and some friends in 1832, the BNC remains
to this day the local learned society devoted to the study of natural
history and antiquities.
Angling, hunting and hawking were a feature of many Victorian meetings
and in 1844 on an expedition to St Abbs Head, famous for its seabirds,
several of the members got out rifles and started blasting away at the
wildlife. Nothing was hit.
The BNC continues to organize lectures and excursions to sites all over
the region, but now mostly they leave their firearms at home.
