The
Arts In Berwick -- Other Narratives
Stories
of Countryfolk
Literary interest in the lives of country people has really only blossomed
in the latter part of the 20th.Century.
Most 19th.Century travellers did not expect the rural population to have
much in the way of an education. Consequently in novels and plays rural
people are at best a comic turn. Into 1930s journalists venturing into
the Berwick hinterland treated the odd peasant poet they found with an
amused indulgence.
Only late 20th.Century writers, such as Sue Glover with "Bondagers",
treat the rural community with due respect.
