The
Arts In Berwick -- Other Narratives
Sidney
and Beatrice Webb
The Webbs were tireless social historians and founders of the Fabian Society.
They visited Bamborough for a holiday in 1900, and spent a delightful
week in a tent on the sands. Returning to research the Borough archives
in 1906, they had "dirty stuffy lodgings" and had a dim view
of Berwick: - "a god-forsaken place, inhabited by a dull and somewhat
drunken population, no municipal amenities, no leadership
All the
private enterprise seems run with insufficient capital and brains.."
