The Arts In Berwick -- Other Narratives
Josephine Butler

Born at Millfield Hill in Northumberland, Josephine Butler (1828-1906) was a notable crusader for women's rights.

She campaigned successfully against the Contagious Diseases Acts that made women in garrison towns liable to examination for venereal disease. This and her promotion of women's education has made her a heroine for modern feminists but something of an embarrassment for locals at the time. She is buried in Kirknewton churchyard.
