The Arts In Berwick -- Other Narratives
Local News

The still existing Berwick Advertiser was Berwick's first newspaper, begun in 1808 by Henry Richardson. His father had been a pressman to another printer, but in 1801 they set up their own business producing a number of local editions of well known authors ranging from Homer, Pope and Samuel Johnson's The Rambler.

Henry died in 1823, but the paper was continued by Catherine Richardson. In 1832 local author John Mackay Wilson (1804-35) was appointed as editor.
