The Arts In Berwick -- Other Narratives
The Border Tales

Wilson's Tales of the Borders were an immediate success. The print-run of 2000 at the start had to be dramatically increased, so that by June 1835 some 30,000 copies were being distributed.

The Tales comprise stories from local history and legend, together with accounts of contemporary life and even adventures in foreign lands. Overall the Tales have a simplicity and an earnest moralizing purpose that amused more sophisticated critics, but generations of ordinary readers were intrigued, excited and entertained.
