The
Arts In Berwick -- Music
Rural
Entertainment
In North Northumberland, the distances to major population centres meant
people made their own entertainment.
Village brass bands were organised, though not quite on the scale of the
great colliery bands further south. Sword Dancing remains a particular
northern speciality, but Morris-dancing also has its adherents. Morris-dancing
is not that old. None occurring in England until Henry VII staged some
at his court in 1494. By 1800 it had more-or-less died out and had to
be revived by enthusiasts in the 1920s.
