The
Arts In Berwick -- Music
Private
Music
Before the era of using recordings to hear music, it had to be played
live.
Throughout the 19th.Century a host of minor composers made a living feeding
the pianos of leisured ladies such as these. Often publishers would add
titles to make the works more saleable locally, hence we have "The
Berwick Polka" by the ubiquitous but obscure V.S.De Dobrowolski.
Dazzling recitals by Franz Liszt, seen here being adored by ladies, had
gone a long way to making East European composers and styles fashionable.
Liszt did stop-off in Berwick on 24th.January 1841 at the height of his
fame, but only to have supper.
