The Arts In Berwick -- Legends
The Order of the Garter

The castle at Wark-on-Tweed was supposedly the setting for the banquet at which the Countess of Somerset lost her Garter, which Edward III picked up, which gave him the idea for the Order of the Garter.

The chronicler Froissart described the incident and a number of later poets have mused upon the Countess' blushes. Historians have doubted the story, but researchers found that it is true, only the dance was at Calais. A well was established at Wark in the Victorian period to commemorate the founding of the Order of the Garter.
