The Arts In Berwick --Architecture
Hawksmoor's Town

Hawksmoor designed Berwick Barracks (1721) in the solid castle-like style his colleague Vanburgh had adopted for Seaton Delavel Hall built at the same time. It is unlikely that Hawksmoor would have visited Berwick.

Berwick was largely rebuilt in the Georgian period in the prevailing classical style. The Guildhall (1754-61) is the chief example of this. The design echoes some of Hawksmoor and Vanburgh's monumental style, with the clear influence of James Gibbs' St Martin-in-the-Fields in London (1721-6). Up and down the main streets stand many other fine Georgian houses.
